What is MBTI?
Have you ever heard of the BLM or BLT syndrome? It’s common enough for each of us to fall into in our daily activities: the tendency to wish we could Be Like Them (BLT) or others could Be Like Me (BLM)! Yet in reality, we know that there are wide variations in personalities and viewpoints, so the question becomes “How can I better connect with people who are different from me?”
One way you can achieve this connection is by understanding how your own personality preferences impact your viewpoint and others’ views of you. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) is a widely used and proven technique for this. The MBTI® assessment is an opportunity to choose what resonates most for you among a series of opposite terms (dichotomies), receive a report explaining the implications of your selections, and develop plans for personal development in improving your connections with others.
MBTI® was developed by a mother-daughter team of psychologists, Katherine Cook Briggs (1865-1968) and Isabel Briggs Myers (1897-1980) in the 1940s to enable individuals to grow through an understanding and appreciation of individual differences in healthy personalities and to enhance harmony and productivity in diverse groups. Their research was based on Swiss psychiatrist Carl G. Jung’s (1875-1961) theories of the unconscious and self-realization. Briggs and Myers created the questionnaire known as the MBTI®, which has been used since 1975 in organizations worldwide.
